All the Materials You Need for Your Custom Lingerie
We all know each body is unique. That’s why finding lingerie that fits perfectly and also meets our aesthetic preferences is a real challenge. Some people find their bust too small, others too large, or perhaps there’s always that elastic band that’s either too tight or too loose. That is the great advantage of creating your own lingerie: you can make the perfect lingerie for yourself by purchasing all the materials needed for your custom pieces.
However, choosing the right material for your project can feel overwhelming. There are so many types of fabrics and elastics that it’s hard to know where to start.
In this article, we’ll take a quick look at the various haberdashery materials used in lingerie-making and the kinds of projects they’re suited for.
We’ll cover lingerie fabrics in a separate article.

Let’s get started!
One of the most common reasons people turn to custom lingerie is the need to finally find a bra that fits properly. To make it, however, you’ll need an underwire that fits your bust.
Essential for providing proper support, bra underwires can be made of either plastic or metal and come in sizes ranging from A/1 to G/7 cups.
Once you have your underwire, you’ll need a way to attach it to your bra. For this: Underwire Casing. a simple fabric tube with one or both covered in a soft, velvety material that makes it comfortable against the skin.
It’s sewn around the lower edge of the bra cup, and the desired underwire is inserted inside.
It’s also very useful when making corsets, as you can insert boning into it as well.
Boning provides support to corsets and the foundation of our garments, preventing wrinkles and shaping the body into the desired silhouette.
There are various types of boning, each with different characteristics. If you’re unsure about which one to choose for your project, we’ve covered it in detail in our article “Bonings for corsetry, which one should you choose?”
Scalloped elastic for lingerie is one of the most versatile materials for your custom lingerie. It can be used in a variety of ways.
Its unique feature is that it has on one of the two edges, a scalloped finish for the hem and at the same time it decorates your hem with a series of small crescent moons.
This elastic has a velvety side to ensure maximum comfort when placed against the skin.
You can use scalloped elastic to create your lingerie sets, you can also use it to finish the edges of bra side bands, panties, garter belts and waist cinchers.
Fascinatingly, there is nothing stopping you from using scalloped elastic to finish the hems of sleeves, and waistbands of skirts and pants.
If you are wondering how you can finish the ends of your sportswear or undergarments, while obtaining a durable and stretchy finished edge, the Foldable Elastic Band For Edges is the ideal product for you.
This elastic has a crease in the center that makes it easy to fold, and you can get two elastic layers of equal size that will wrap around the edge of the fabric easily. The Foldable Elastic Band is often used to finish the sharp edge of elastic garments, such as:
- Underwear
- Sports tops
- Tank tops
- Bras
- Bodysuits and, more generally, any garments requiring an elastic and durable edge.
This elastic bra strap is perfect if you want to replace the old strap on one of your favorite bras, or even to make your own lingerie items such as bras, harnesses and garters.
This elastic has a velvety side to ensure maximum comfort when placed against the skin.
This product is available in different colors.
You cannot make your bra or dress with cups without sew-foam padding.
Cut & sew foam is a material that is available in various thicknesses. It consists of two layers of fabric with a layer of foam in between. As the name suggests, this material can be easily cut and sewn, allowing you to create any 3D shapes you desire.
By joining the various pieces of the pattern, you can create an infinite variety of shapes with simple zig-zag stitching. Padding fabric, or sew-foam, can be used to make bra cups, dresses, costumes, shoulder straps, padding, and neck or hip supports
Of all those previously mentioned, undoubtedly, it is most commonly used as padding for bras. By using the bra pattern, we can create a perfect made-to-measure cup and, if necessary, a push-up option.
As we’ve previously mentioned, we all have unique bodies that can change over time—losing or gaining weight—and even our preferences in the fit of our lingerie can vary from day to day.
Therefore, making a garment that fits perfectly isn’t enough—it also needs to be adjustable, and that’s what rings and sliders are for.
Rings are small circles made of plastic or metal through which you can thread a strap to connect different parts of your design, easily adjusting their direction. Sliders are small, eight-shaped plastic pieces that, when straps are threaded through them, let you adjust the strap length Both are available in plastic or metal and come in various colors. Common options include transparent, gold, silver, black, pink, and white.
Another product that allows you to adjust the fit of your garment is the bra closure. A bra closure consists of two parts: one with a row of 2 hooks and the other with 3 or more rows of eyes, enabling you to adjust the width of your lingerie as desired.
The back of the hooks are velvety to provide maximum comfort when in contact with the skin. One end of both hooks has a space in which you can insert the fabric of your bra so that it will result in a clean, perfectly finished job, similar to those purchased at the store. It’s ideal for bras, bodysuits, and garter belts.
To add the cherry to your cake, insert small satin bows onto your lingerie ensemble; only then can it be considered complete and perfect.
These elegant bows and satin rosettes are perfect for decorating all your corsetry projects and crafts.
They’re often used to embellish the center of bras, where straps meet the cups, and even on panties and garter belts.
Perhaps you want to create a custom lingerie set or fix the one that you’ve had for years and are so fond of, the Metal Garter Belt Hook is what you need.
These hooks are perfect for creating:
- Garter belts
- Guêpière also known as Waist Cinchers
- Garters
The Garter Belt Hook is made of a silver-colored metal, with a clear silicone tab, making it ideal to match all the colors and fabrics in your project.
Designed to be used with bra straps, rings, and sliders, garter clips let you easily adjust the length of your straps.
That’s it! These are the main materials you’ll need for your custom lingerie As I mentioned earlier, I’ll write another article entirely dedicated to lingerie fabrics in the future.
